Traditional Program

The traditional but increasingly less popular standard treatment for stored chipper, processor and tablestock potatoes is one to two applications of CIPC per season, applied at a standard rate. CIPC is relatively inexpensive and offers 98% effective, long-term sprout suppression. However, it carries significant residue and environmental concerns. As storage building contamination can persist for decades, CIPC must NOT be used in or around any storage building where seed is or may later be stored. Too, CIPC contaminates all equipment used when unloading the treated storage. The European Food Safety Authority deregulated CIPC effective October 2020.

Because CIPC is a particle rather than a vapour, it must come in very close contact with each individual eye on a tuber. For that reason, it is only effective when applied in storages with excellent, consistent airflow and is far less effective in settled piles. CIPC stops cell division of the sprout, making it strictly a sprout control program.

Application timing is based on the condition of tubers at load-in and throughout the storage season. Timing and rate should consider tuber maturity, stress factors at harvest, etc. Timing and rate will also vary based on the variety of potatoes stored, expected storage length, storage conditions and end user requirements.

Reduced CIPC Program

Producers looking for an inexpensive but somewhat greener, more sustainable sprout management option might opt for a reduced CIPC program. Decreasing the frequency and/or rate of CIPC application reduces but does not entirely mitigate residue and environmental concerns. Contamination by CIPC persists for decades in storage buildings regardless of rate. Europe deregulated CIPC effective October 2020.

In many cases, reduced CIPC should be supplemented with a sprout suppression product (1,4SIGHT®) or rescue product (1,4 ZAP®). 1,4SIGHT® and 1,4Zap® may offer synergistic benefits when applied alongside CIPC.

Sustainable Bio-Control Program (CIPC Free)

A CIPC-Free Program is the greenest storage program available, allowing producers to sustainably maintain field-fresh quality throughout the storage season. 1,4SIGHT® (chipper, processing and tablestock) and 1,4SEED® (seedstock) can be applied right at door closure. Apply 1,4SIGHT® at load-in and again before dormancy break to extend dormancy and supress sprouting. Retreatment timing is dependent on tuber condition and storage bin conditions, especially air flow rate and temperature. Apply 1,4Zap® or a combination of 1,4Zap® and 1,4SIGHT® late in the storage season if peeping occurs.

Because 1,4SIGHT® and 1,4SEED® are still relatively new to the marketplace, talk to your distributor to determine a customized program that suits your needs.

Bruise/Shrink Reduction Program

EARLY SEASON PROTECTION: When applied at or soon after door closure, 1,4SIGHT® (in processing, chipper and tablestock potatoes) or 1,4SEED® (in seedstock) triggers the production of enzymes in the potato that limit water loss and support wound healing, leading to a more turgid potato that resists bruising and shrink.

LATE SEASON PROTECTION: 1,4SIGHT® can be applied late in the storage season (as little as two to four weeks before shipping) to reduce the colour formation in pressure bruises that occur just before or during load-out. While not as effective as an early-season application, a late-season application can offer bruise-reduction benefits.

NOTE: An early or late season application is not a stand-alone storage management program in and of itself. It should be done in conjunction with additional 1,4SIGHT®, 1,4Zap® and/or CIPC applications in chipper, processing and table potatoes, or 1,4SEED® in seedstock piles.
